Making a big move, whether it is to a new town, a new country, or just around the corner, can be hectic and stressful if you don’t prepare ahead of time. When getting ready to move, people often realize how much stuff they own and feel overwhelmed with what to do with it. Read below for a guide on the right way to organize your belongings before moving so that you have a less stressful experience.

Start Early

As soon as you know you have to move, start making an organizational plan. The earlier you start, the more you can get done, and on moving day you will have everything boxed up and ready to go. Start by going from room to room and evaluate how many boxes you will need per room, which furniture needs to be taken apart, and what you can get rid of. A good organizational plan should also include a daily tasks list so that you do not fall behind.

Gather Packing Supplies

Packing your whole life up requires a lot of supplies from boxes to tape to permanent markers. You can either go to the store and buy a lot of these supplies in bulk, or you can buy as you go so that you don’t accidentally end up with extra. Another option is to contact a moving service like this Canada-wide moving company with flexible options to see if they provide their own packing supplies. If that is so, then their movers will come in the day before your move-out date and pack everything into boxes for you. This means all of your kitchenware is nicely wrapped up in bubble wrap and placed into boxes, your furniture wrapped up in cushiony blankets, and all of your clothes hung up in wardrobe moving boxes.

Declutter

One of the best things you can do before moving is to declutter. If you have lived somewhere for many years, you are bound to have accumulated stuff that you definitely don’t need to bring along with you to your new home. As you go through all of your belongings, sort them into four piles: keep, donate, sell, and dispose. You will be amazed by how much stuff you can get rid of and that will save you time and money when the real packing begins.

Label and Color Code

If you want unpacking to be as organized as packing, then you must label and color code all of your moving boxes. This means after each box is packed and sealed, you can put a label sticker on it and write out the contents on multiple sides of the box. This way, movers will know exactly where to bring each box when they take them out of the truck.

Make a Moving Inventory

Every time you fill a box, write a list in your inventory of what is in the box so that you have a record of everything for when you are unpacking in your new house. That way, if anything gets lost, you will at least know that it was accounted for when it was put on the moving truck.

With these easy organizational tips, you will be ready to go on a moving day. Remember to always keep a permanent marker on hand to label boxes and start the packing process as early as possible.
